Facebook Adds Voice Calling to iOS Messenger App
Facebook is rolling out a free calling option to iPhone Facebook Messenger users.
The new function, which is rolling out to the Facebook Messenger iOS app, requires Messenger users to open a conversation with another iPhone owner, tap the "i" button in the top right corner, and press "Free Call." The recipient will then receive a pop-up notification that says, for example, "Stephanie Mlot is calling."
To those users without full functionality yet, the app reminds you that free calling is unavailable, and "You don't have permission to chat with this person" (see below).
The new option offers a real boost to people with spotty cell service at work or at home, and those hoping to conserve minutes.
Facebook hinted that the feature was in the works earlier this month, when it rolled out updates to its iOS and Android Messenger apps to include voicemail. At that point, Canadian iOS users were also given access to the voice-calling feature.
As The Verge pointed out, the move means Facebook could have "one of the largest communities of VoIP users in the world." Competitors like Skype and Vonage have much smaller user bases compared to the most popular social network.
Facebook and Skype have been in cahoots for two and a half years, since the social network in 2011 integrated a Skype video-calling feature directly into Facebook.com. But the tool was not made available on mobile, perhaps to allow Facebook to strike out on its own.
The Facebook Messenger app is currently available for free in the Apple App Store.
Kim Dotcom starts new file-sharing site

Mr Dotcom launched Mega early on Sunday |
Mega, a web-based service that lets people upload and store files of any kind, is a sequel to the Megaupload system that was shut down last January.
Police raids on the offices and home of Kim Dotcom led to the closure of Megaupload.
The Mega site went online at dawn on Sunday, with Mr Dotcom due to hold a gala at his New Zealand mansion later.
Mr Dotcom has said the new site complies with the law and warned that attempts to take it down would be futile.
"This is not some kind of finger to the US government or to Hollywood," he told Reuters on Saturday.
"Legally, there's just nothing there that could be used to shut us down. This site is just as legitimate and has the right to exist as Dropbox, Boxnet and other competitors."
Hours after the site was launched, Mr Dotcom tweeted that it had received 250,000 user registrations, although limited server capacity meant Mega was unreachable to many.
In a series of earlier tweets Mr Dotcom said every customer would have 50 gigabytes of free storage - far more than is offered by rival services such as Dropbox or Microsoft's SkyDrive.

A gala will be held at Dotcom Mansion in Auckland later |
The 2012 raids on Megaupload were carried out because, said US law enforcement, many users of Megaupload were engaged in pirating content and illegally sharing it.
They accused Mr Dotcom and other managers at Megaupload of profiting from piracy.
Mr Dotcom, who was born Kim Schmitz, has rebuffed the accusations and is fighting a legal battle to stay in New Zealand from where he ran Megaupload.
A hearing on whether he can be extradited to the US is due to be held in March.
The case has generated controversy in New Zealand over the way the police and intelligence services gathered evidence before the raid and won an apology to Mr Dotcom from the country's prime minister.
Mr Dotcom has also won support from prominent computer pioneers such as Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak.
The raid on Megaupload put 25 petabytes of data uploaded to it by its 50 million members into a legal limbo.
In one message, Mr Dotcom said he was working with lawyers and the Electronic Frontier Foundation, which campaigns on digital rights issues, to get access to that seized data and return it to users.

Samsung Galaxy S IV coming in May 2013
The speculations have been fuelled by a post from Samsung Lebanon on Facebook saying that the upcoming Galaxy S IV will not launch before May 2013. Facebook user Anthony Ghattas posted a question on Samsung Lebanon's page on the social networking website, asking, "Hey, is there any news for the Samsung Galaxy S4 release?" The reply he received from the company was "The Galaxy SIV won't be released before May 2013."
Sammobile, a tech blog, has also revealed leaked press shots of the Galaxy S IV. The blog noticed that "the device will use on-screen buttons as there is no home-button present on the device, the bezel around the device is much thinner and the device features a large display."
Rumours say that the upcoming flagship will have a 4.99-inch SuperAMOLED touchscreen with 441ppi pixel density. According to a Wall Street Journal report, the display of the device will be unbreakable, while rumours also suggest that it will also be bendable. Speculations are also rife that the device will be powered by a 2GHz quad-core processor and sport a 13MP camera on the back.
